Pizza, Logistical Updates + Media Facts

Thank you, faculty, for the wonderful turnout yesterday, day 2 of MoveUP’s walkout. And thank you for posting pictures on social media.

Thanks also to those who have created images to capture the issue about MoveUP’s proposal, and about the language already in the UBC CUPE 2050 collective agreement:

These images highlight two of the inaccuracies in some media coverage:

  1. MoveUP is not asking for “right” to work remotely–they just want to use the grievance process for unreasonable decisions about remote work

  2. “No other post-sec institutions have this”: Wrong. Others do have or are currently adding this language to their collective agreements: UBC (images above), UVic, Justice Institute, and others that are still in negotiation, but are in agreement on this issue

Pizza invitation + picketing updates

At about 5 p.m. this evening the CFA will provide pizza for the picketers on the evening shift at Shipyards and at the Purcell Way station at Lynnmour/North Van campus. Please come and join us, even if you were not already scheduled for an evening shift!

A couple of logistical notes:

  1. Tonight’s 4-8 p.m. shift at the main campus will be at only one site: Purcell Way. There won’t be picketing stations at the Skeena or Monashee sites.

  2. Parking Lot 4, on the north side of campus, is available for faculty throughout the strike–using that lot is not crossing the picket line.

And a reminder that attending convocation ceremonies on campus is crossing the picket line. We know how difficult it is to miss the ceremony. Some departments have invited their graduating students to visit them on the picket line, or are attending celebratory social events with the students.
