Bargaining Bulletin #1
Dear Colleagues, in this, the first of our Bargaining Bulletins for this round, we wanted you to know that we have contacted the University with our “Notice to Bargain” and have had discussions with their representative about the protocol agreement. While discussions regarding the protocol continue, we have also been working on consolidating and editing a package of proposals (including improvements to our benefits, thanks to some helpful recommendations from members).
With this in mind, there are some areas where we are requesting further input to help us in crafting language that best meets the needs of the faculty members.
Research is emerging as an important topic in this round, and we would like to convene a meeting of stakeholders to discuss creative solutions. As new programs are brought on board, we are finding increased pressure to oversee student work, particularly the work of Honours students. This as well as traditional research projects and other initiatives must be adequately funded and compensated appropriately. We would like to hear your thoughts and experiences. Please send an e-mail to cfa@capilanou.ca by 26 October to let us know if you are interested in joining a discussion on the topic, and we will schedule a meeting.
Coordinator duties: We would also like to talk further with Coordinators to review coordinator language, following our meeting with a group of coordinators last spring. This, also, is an area where it has long been evident that workload expectations exceed the level of compensation, and we need to gather more of the nuanced details in order to determine out best approach. We will schedule a meeting for this particular group in the coming weeks.
Evaluations: We have heard a variety of perspectives on the evaluation process and encourage anyone who has a comment, observation, anecdote, or suggestion to email a member of your Bargaining team (names below). The more information we can gather, the better our understanding of the issue.
Finally, for current non-regular faculty members or members who have recently gone through the non-regular experience, we wanted to let you know that the Non-regular Faculty committee will be meeting on Zoom on Nov. 4th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and you are both welcome and encouraged to join this bargaining-focused session.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to email a member of your Faculty Association bargaining committee.
In Solidarity, Michael Begg (Chief Bargainer), Douglas Alards-Tomalin, Tim Acton, CFA President Eduardo Azmitia (ex officio)
