Black History Month and Start of Bargaining
Every February, people in Canada and the United States celebrate Black History Month. Across these two countries events and festivities are organized to honour the legacy of Black people and members of the African diaspora and their communities. We want to acknowledge that Black workers, activists, and scholars have had a profound impact in pushing the labour movement to where it is today.
We want to encourage you to attend and participate in the wonderful array of events that have been organized collegially between faculty, students, staff, and administrators during this month. At the CFA, we take pride in having worked with our members to steer our university community towards a meaningful acknowledgement and celebration of these months.
As you take part in and enjoy the scheduled activities, we hope that you reflect on the themes for 2023 which are: "Ours to Tell" and "Black Resistance". These themes are exhorting us to engage in dialogue, to practice reflexive listening, and to realize the importance of social mobilization for the protection of rights, privileges, and liberties.
With these themes in mind, we want to take this opportunity to inform you that this week our Bargaining Committee officially met with the administration in order to start the current cycle of negotiations. You will receive Bargaining and Stewards Bulletins very soon. They will keep you informed of the unfolding negotiations and of key developments in the realm of labour relations.
Once again, we want to make a call for volunteers to our Organizing Committee. Important rights and concessions that were achieved by previous generations of faculty members are under threat. We need as many members as possible supporting the faculty association with organizing and mobilizing efforts.
Please do not hesitate to send us an email to cfa@capilanou.ca if you are interested in supporting your CFA. Any contribution is greatly valued and appreciated.
In solidarity,
Eduardo Azmitia
