On campus? Support your colleagues by joining their protest station
Dear colleagues: We have a couple of FAQ reminders below about the MoveUP job action update, but first we want to encourage you to visit your MoveUP colleagues at their two protest stations near the bus loop and at the NV campus entrance near the traffic light on Purcell Way.
As you can see in the photo above, faculty have been visiting MoveUP colleagues to share support and wear CFA signs in solidarity. Some have created their own signs.
The strike is near the end of its third week of targeted job actions. The employer has still refused to return to the table. The MoveUP proposal at issue is for a fair process for determining flexible work arrangements and is the fulfillment of a promise the administration made to MoveUP before bargaining began. MoveUP just wants an appeal process for members who are being treated unfairly. Other universities and colleagues have similar provisions. We hope that a show of solidarity will bring the administration back to the table and end the strike.
If MoveUP is left with no choice but to do a full walkout and set up pickets, we will need to demonstrate our solidarity even more strongly: by refusing to work and joining them on the picket line.
See our FAQs about what this means for faculty. We want to highlight two points:
If MoveUP sets up a picket line around campus, any work you do means you are crossing the picket line. Working remotely at home or at an alternative venue is crossing the picket line. So is attending ceremonies on campus. It will also only help to prolong the strike by reducing the pressure on the administration to return to the table. We ask again that all faculty support MoveUP if they set up pickets, just as they have always supported us when faculty have had to go on strike, most recently in 2015.
Regular faculty who are on their scheduled vacation are entitled to pay, since our paid vacation time is a right. You are welcome to come and picket while you are on vacation. Even if you are starting your vacation on the typical date of 15 June, we recommend that you let your department know your schedule now, so there are no questions about it later.
We hope that with unity, we will persuade the employer to return to the table. Please show your support to MoveUP by visiting their stations whenever you can, and by standing with them at the picket line.
In solidarity, Job action committee
